Meet Ishraq, a native of Yemen who now resides in Oneida County. Ishraq volunteers as a Duty Officer, helping to ensure timely activation and monitoring of local and regional Disaster Action Team (DAT) responses to home fires and other local disasters.

“I’m Ishraq Alhamdani from Yemen, deeply shaped by my parents’ values of compassion and resilience. Becoming a single mother to my beloved son Ayham at a very young age was one of life’s greatest challenges. Despite the difficulties, Ayham became not only my son but also my lifelong inspiration and closest companion, teaching me the true meaning of strength and determination.
“Moving to the United States later in life, I pursued studies in coding and billing, driven by my husband’s unwavering support and his belief in my abilities. His encouragement has been my pillar, guiding me through new challenges and opportunities.
“Due to the war in my homeland, my entire family and I were displaced to Malaysia, where we experienced firsthand the challenges of displacement and the importance of compassion and security. Now, here with the American Red Cross, I am driven to contribute to their mission of alleviating suffering and providing solace, drawing from my personal experiences of displacement and crises. I feel a deep-seated need to help those facing similar challenges.
“As a Duty Officer with the Red Cross, I find profound fulfillment in assisting those facing crises, and I am genuinely happy to do so. Beyond my volunteer work, I find joy in writing novels and short stories, exploring creativity and sharing narratives that resonate with others.
“Thank you for letting me share my journey. I am committed to continuing my service with the American Red Cross, embracing each opportunity to make a meaningful difference.”
Warm regards,
Ishraq Alhamdani
