When Roger Hannay of Westerlo, New York returned from Vietnam in 1966, he began his career in the family business, Hannay Reels, the nation’s leading manufacturer of hose reels for commercia and industrial reels since 1933. Roger also returned with a dedication to community service, to his church, the Town of Westerlo Fire Department, and the American Red Cross.

Roger began a lifelong tradition of blood donation, giving at every opportunity, and encouraging his employees at the plant in Albany County’s Hilltowns to donate as well. Hannay instituted a policy of allowing employees two hours of paid time off to donate blood. The company held on-site blood drives, with Roger rolling up his sleeves as inspiration. Over his lifetime, Roger donated unknown gallons of blood, and as fate would have it, transitioned from “giver to receiver.” At the end of his life, Roger received multiple blood transfusions, which notably extended his quality of life until his passing in 2018.
Roger’s dedication to service and community has extended to his children, Eric Hannay, who serves as CEO and President, and Elaine Hannay Gruener, Chief Operating Officer.
Through their generosity, and that of Hannay Reels, a new Dodge Ram ProMaster 3500 has begun making daily transports of blood collection equipment and supplies in support of blood drives being held throughout upstate New York.
Eric and Elaine joined Red Cross staff and volunteers to launch the life-saving vehicle into service on September 29th, 202
