Disaster Action Team (DAT) supervisors are the team leaders on a DAT response, providing immediate emergency assistance to individuals and families who have been impacted by a home fire or other local disaster. They are responsible for leading the on-scene response to ensure the immediate disaster-related needs of the residents are assessed and addressed, assuring all Red Cross standards and procedures are followed and monitoring the safety of the on-scene team members.

Diana Edwards from the Central and Northern New York Chapter joined the American Red Cross as a volunteer two years ago.
“I was attending a First Aid/CPR recertification class at the Utica Red Cross office when the Disaster Action Team (DAT) was activated for a large multi-family fire. A volunteer briefly stopped into our classroom and mentioned that the team was always looking for extra hands—even for just a few hours. That simple comment stayed with me. Later that evening, I went home and applied to volunteer, and that decision has truly shaped the path I’m on today.
“I now serve as a DAT Supervisor, where I lead on‑scene responses and ensure that clients’ immediate needs are met during what is often one of the most difficult moments of their lives. In this role, I’m responsible for maintaining team safety, upholding Red Cross standards and procedures, and mentoring novice volunteers as they grow into confident responders.
“Helping my community in this way gives me a deep sense of purpose. Providing immediate care and comfort to families during crisis reinforces why the Red Cross mission matters and why I’m proud to be part of it—because no family should ever face a disaster alone.
“In addition to DAT, I also serve as a Disaster Duty Officer, collaborating with team members across the region to support disaster responses as they occur. I’m also a Home Fire Campaign Lead, where I track smoke alarm installation requests, coordinate installation visits, and manage supply inventory to help strengthen preparedness in our community.
“Overall, volunteering with the Red Cross has allowed me to make a meaningful impact while continuing to grow as a leader and responder, and that is why I remain committed to this work.”
