Fire Georgetown, South Carolina 2018</image:title><image:caption>June 26, 2018.Georgetown, South Carolina.Home Fire.Pictured: Janette and Timothy WashingtonJanette Washington and her son Timothy stand inside the charred ruins of their South Carolina home after losing everything in a devastating fire. The Washingtonís lives were saved by smoke alarms that alerted them to danger late one night during a severe storm. ìWhen I looked down the hall, all I could was the fire coming from the ceiling,î Ms. Washington remembered. Mother and son are alive today, thanks to new smoke alarms installed as part of a home fire safety campaign sponsored by The American Red Cross and local fire departments. Only a few months before the fire, fire fighters had installed the free alarms from the American Red Cross and discussed how the family could escape in the event of an fire. ìIt was very scary, but I know for a fact, if it hadnít been for those fire alarms, I was going back to sleep,î Janette said. ìThey saved our life. Fayetteville, North Carolina –(The Red Cross shelter at Smith Recreation center) – Kadesha, her sister Felicia and their family moved from Raleigh, NC to Lumberton, NC only 5 weeks ago to “make a fresh start.” And then, the river started to rise after Hurricane Matthew, and they were driven from their new home. They were able to drive out to Fayetteville to the northwest of Lumberton, where the waters had receded earlier in the week, and stay at the Red Cross shelter here. It has been a very emotional journey, knowing that they do not have a home to return to right now, and a 3 year old and 5 month old to care for. Luckily, the Smith Recreation center shelter has a playground, and Da'marion has been playing there every day. Felicia, said, “We are so grateful for the Red Cross. They gave us a stroller, a bouncer and all the clothes for Da'marion They’ve been a godsend. They got the baby the soy-based milk we’ve been feeding her, because she’s lactose intolerant.” Photo by Daniel Cima for the American Red Raeford, North Carolina. Lashandra was overjoyed when the Red Cross truck pulled up to her house. She lives in a home with her seven kids and needed supplies badly. When asked what she needed she replied, “I’ll take anything you’ve got, I have seven babies!” Lashandra’s kids, ranging from ages seventeen to four, helped her carry the supplies to the house. The Red Cross gave the family everything from cleaning supplies to diapers and everything in between. Lashandra and her kids were all very thankful for the help from the Red Cross, hugs were given all around.
