The American Red Cross is helping thousands of families across the state of Texas after severe storms this weekend brought tornadoes, heavy rains and flash flooding to already water-logged communities.
The latest round of severe weather in Texas comes on the heels of flooding which occurred in the aftermath of Hurricane Patricia. The Red Cross is now coordinating massive relief operations across the state, including the hardest hits areas in Austin, San Antonio and Houston. Many of these places were also heavily impacted by tornadoes, flooding and severe weather in May and June.
Since October 23, when the latest series of storm systems started, the Red Cross has:
- Opened a total of 24 shelters, and provided more than 650 overnight stays
- Provided more than 7,000 meals and snacks
- Distributed more than 1,890 relief supplies
- Provided more than 300 health and mental health services
- Deployed more than 200 disaster workers and 18 emergency response vehicles to help those in need
Among those 200 disaster workers are seven volunteers from right here in the Eastern New York Region. We extend our heartfelt thanks to these dedicated Red Crossers who have answered the call to help others in need:
- Jamie Bonner – North Country Chapter volunteer from Westville, NY
- Charlie Diorio – Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter volunteer from Accord, NY
- Kristen Gordon – North Country Chapter volunteer from Calcium, NY
- Cary Eddy – Northeastern New York Chapter volunteer from Saratoga Springs, NY
- Scott McGillicuddy – Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter volunteer from Poughkeepsie, NY
