Red Cross Volunteer Jennifer Barry recently returned from her first deployment to New Orleans and we had the opportunity to speak with her about her experience and hear her takeaways. When discussing her role as a volunteer, she described herself as “an information desk.”I would be the first stop if someone staying in the hotel had an issue or a concern. They could need transportation to a doctor’s appointment, request caseworker support, or be looking for additional services outside of the Red Cross.”  As she reflected on the experience as a whole, she stressed the importance of flexibility and cooperation. “The word you heard the most during training was flexibility and knowing that going in was so helpful. Every situation is going to be different and your role may change, but volunteers are all there for the same purpose. Accept people for who they are and remember why they’re there to help make deployment a positive experience.”
