Today, on the 24th anniversary 9/11, we pause to honor the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the extraordinary acts of courage and compassion that followed one of the most devastating events on American soil.
We remember the thousands who perished, and we pay tribute to the incredible volunteers—many of whom were part of the Red Cross family—who responded with unwavering dedication. From mental health counselors offering comfort, to blood donors helping save lives, and those who supported the long recovery efforts, your legacy lives on in every act of service we continue today.
Recently, I read a powerful book titled “The Unthinkable” by Amanda Ripley. One story that stood out was that of Rick Rescorla, a Morgan Stanley employee who, after surviving the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, became convinced the towers would be targeted again. He led regular evacuation drills, tabletop exercises, and no-notice events to prepare his colleagues. On 9/11, thanks to his foresight and leadership, 2,700 Morgan Stanley employees safely evacuated. Rick was last seen re-entering the building to assist others still inside. He was one of 13 Morgan Stanley employees who died that day. His story is a profound reminder of the power of preparedness.

Preparedness is at the heart of what we do at the American Red Cross. The 9/11 Commission emphasized the importance of community readiness in the face of future disasters. As we reflect today, let us also recommit ourselves to this mission—ensuring our communities have the tools, plans, and support they need to face whatever lies ahead.
While we mourn the loss of so many, we also carry forward the lessons learned. Let us honor their memory by continuing to build a culture of preparedness, resilience, and compassion.
Here are four ways you can take action today:
- Take a CPR/First Aid class to be ready to help in an emergency.
- Encourage your organization to complete Ready Rating—a free, self-paced program that helps businesses and organizations become better prepared. Visit readyrating.org
- Become a trained shelter worker so you’re ready to support your community when it needs you most.
- Donate blood to ensure our hospitals are prepared to meet the needs of trauma patients and others in critical need.
Thank you for all that you do to support the Red Cross mission.
With gratitude,
Kevin Coffey
