For Mia Hubbert, volunteering with the American Red Cross began with something she was already doing for her church and community, helping people give blood.

After 16 years of organizing her church’s annual blood drive, a Red Cross Blood Services account representative noticed Mia’s dedication and encouraged her to join as a volunteer. She hasn’t stopped answering the call since.

Today, Mia wears many hats as a Red Cross volunteer for the Hudson Valley Chapter, including Blood Services Volunteer Scheduler and Disaster Action Team (DAT) Leader, supporting blood drives, responding to disasters, and doing community outreach.

When a home fire or other local disaster strikes, Mia is there to support families in crisis. She knows that sometimes the most important thing a volunteer can do is listen.

One question guides her approach: “What do you need right now?”

Mia believes the goal of her volunteer work is to help people regain their footing, move forward, and to let them know they don’t have to face difficult situations alone. After nearly a decade as a Red Cross volunteer, Mia has responded to countless emergencies, including one of her most memorable days when she responded to three fires in a single day.

Her advice to anyone considering volunteering is simple:

“It’s worth every moment you spend volunteering, no matter how much or how little time.”
