So, the big $1.5 billion Powerball drawing is tonight, and pretty much everyone is talking about it. By now, you’ve probably seen or heard that the odds of winning the jackpot are an incredible 1 in 292 million. If you want to get a picture of what that really looks like, check out this visualization from the Wall Street Journal.
The fact is, you’re more likely to be struck by lightning (1 in 12,000), hit a hole-in-one (1 in 12,500), be killed by a shark attack (1 in 3.75 million) or become president of the United States (1 in 10 million) than you are to win the Powerball jackpot.
But did you know that there’s a 1 in 4 chance that, in your lifetime, your household will experience a home fire? One in four. That’s a 25% chance that your home will suffer a fire large enough to be reported to a fire department.
The Red Cross is hard at work across the U.S. and right here in Eastern New York helping families learn how to prevent and prepare for the possibility of a home fire. But the fact remains that fires happen, and the Red Cross is there to help.
We’d love for you to win the Powerball. We really would! But based on the odds, we’d love it even more if you took some time before tonight’s drawing to practice your 2-minute home fire escape plan, test your smoke alarms to make sure they’re working, and make a gift to help the Red Cross provide relief where it’s needed most.
